Ornaments that reflect and bind the family! #pcholidayUncategorized | Nirasha Jaganath | December 12, 2013 at 7:27 pm
While I have been turning down several opportunities to work with amazing brands I could not say no to Personal Creations. For one, I love their customer service and secondly I am a huge sucker for personalized anything. So I’m no Christian but I believe in celebrating as many festivals as I can. Life is too short to celebrate any less. Plus, whatever my faith is, it is not weakened by learning more of other faiths. So that means I put up a Christmas tree every year, granted it is fake but still a tree.
While many people here have a history of their trees, being an immigrant my history here is limited. Having kids builds history. As I took out the tree this year I noticed that the ornaments of the previous years that they made at school or home formed our history. It made it all too special. I wanted ornaments this year that reflected the now. I chose the iPad ornament one with my girls because next year they may be into something else but this year will be remembered when I see it.
But my favorite purchase from Personal Creations, and one that will be so extra meaningful will be the Christmas stockings. I have always meant to get personalized stockings but it never came to fruition, but this year there it will be a special Christmas. You see, this year my sister from South Africa will be joining us. I have not seen her in 11 years. That’s right, E-L-E-V-E-N years.
I still have goosebumps and she is not even here yet, she gets here on Friday. Boston airport may not be able to contain the hugs and tears. Yes, we’re close and no it was not intentional to be so long. I may have to write another post just about that, but I wanted to get back to the stockings. While my sister is my family, 11 years makes it hard to be a part of each other’s lives. I would imagine there is nothing more scary for my sister than coming to a new country, meeting nieces she has never met, during a holiday season and trying to fit in. Having everything around you show you a family that you are not totally part of can make anyone feel unwelcome or an outsider.
So I decided to get all of us Christmas Stockings with our names on it, and one for my sister too. I also got one for the sister who is back home missing out, so she could feel a part of it too. How’s that for being part f a family? Better yet? Those stockings, hers and my little sister’s one, will travel back with her in 2 weeks to South Africa. Which means that while we are apart, those stockings will already have created a memory that spans the oceans.
And there’s more.. I got the cutest Advent calendar stocking. Guess what will be going into each day as we countdown to Christmas? Instead of objects, I will be putting in special family activities,.. like movie, bowling, boardgames, singing etc. I think those memories will outlive any toy, don’t you think so too?
