7 Shopping Tips For Tweens, by Tweens! (RUUM giftcard giveaway)

Ruum recently asked us to check out their store in Natick and we were happy to oblige. We are avid shoppers at Ruum in a mall nearer to me but I still agreed to see the newer location. I felt like we were cheating on our regular RUUM (the staff know my girls and I pretty well) but was pleasantly surprised to see the manager of our location RUUM at this location. My girls love shopping. Did I say love shopping? No, I mean they LOVE shopping! I love raising well rounded kids so I am comfortable with them being fashionistas knowing that both of them are crazy about Math too.

Since my girls earn money with chores, they are pretty keen to hold on the purse strings tighter to make sure it is not spent too easily. They seriously are better at it than I, and outfits that I think look crazy, they not only make work, but make it work well. I decided to ask them for some shopping advice for their peers.

1. Don’t spend all your money.

This was a lesson they learned early on, when the eagerness to “just spend it” was followed by “it’s all gone”. Saving for something bigger was hard but they found that if they always made sure there was something left in the purse it was less depressing. I concur!

2. Buy clothes for the season.

After a few times of hitting the clearance section which has mainly clothing of the season gone by, and thinking “what a bargain”, they found that they never used most of those items. Sure a few were worth it but the rest got buried under the current season’s clothing. When the season arrived they mostly were not interested in it, because of course their taste (color and style) has changed by then. Duh! Also they sadly found out moms are not too keen on summer dresses in snowy weather.

3. Buy the correct socks

It may seem like such a trivial thing to you and me, but the kiddos thought that this was an important item so I noted it. Long socks are meant to be seen and choose it only if you want to pair it with dresses, skirts or shorts. Short socks are for just keeping feet warm or gym days.

4. Sales are important

Sometimes something similar to something marked full price can be found on sale. Saving some of your money means stretching the savings. If you take out of season summer wear, pair it will a long sleeves shirt and thick leggings.

5. Choose clothing you can use more than 1 way

Buying items that you can mix and match means you can create more outfits with less money. So when you’re shopping try not to make just one outfit ensemble at a time.

6. Try on the shoes

They make look cute but try them. Sometimes you love them and insist your parents buy them and they are no so comfortable. Also making sure you know when you plan on wearing the shoes will help to know if they are worth getting. Too many shoes sit collecting dust while others have their soles worn out with use.

7. Check on the quality

It broke my kiddo’s heart when she spent her savings on an item only for the pearls to fall off. I don’t think she has been brave enough since then to buy anything with pearls attached. Now the girls confidently ask the shopping assistant how strong are the gemstones or glitter. They have seen how not so fun the item looks when they come off and are trying to learn from that experience (and share the learning with you too!

Ruum was not only kind enough to give me a gift card to check out the latest offerings but also one for my readers.

I love shopping at RUUM for several reasons. I love them especially because they….

  • have activities to entertain kids as they shop
  • have clothing that is amazing quality
  • have clothing for little girls that don’t make my daughter look trashy (you know exactly what I mean).
  • have an awesome rewards program
  • have amazing styles.
  • embrace the fashonista within
