Congratulations Clarissa!

This is it people! The Croods is here! I have already seen it twice, once in LA and once with my kids but guess what? I will be seeing it again with my kids. Yes, I loved it THAT much.

I was very excited about the movie touching on the caveman era, especially after seeing Ice Age era bringing so much entertainment to the family. To get the scoop on how they got the picture perfect Markus Manninen, the Visual Effects Supervisor on The Croods, spoke to us.

Some 3D movies are just that in namesake but The Croods takes every bit of advantage of that feature.

Markus Manninen described how they achieved that:

So we started exploring the things that are going to make you feel like you’re there.

For example, the atmosphere, we actually developed something called BIA, which is bugs in the air, as well.

It makes you feel like you’re there, having things around you come from over your shoulder and so on

We asked if there was any “easter egg” type surprises in the movie and then he gave us a little bit of a surprising news about a bit of “Shrek” in the movie:

I think we had a lot of stuff that we know that most people wouldn’t notice.  For example, we have rock textures from Shrek, because we wanted to save money, and now we know where it is, obviously.  So, it’s the Shrek texture.

So I bet you’re thinking, like we were, how much of this period was authentic. I imagined people pouring over history books studying the era and ensuring anthropologists scrubbed over details with a fine tooth comb. Markus opened the deets to us:

There’s a lot of thinking that goes into it. I think we didn’t want to limit ourselves from the period, if you’re talking about nature and the look. We wanted to take it as a starting point thinking about what we knew as it happened historically. But, we put this whole world on steroids.

Spoilert alert! Don’t read this part if you have not seen the movie yet. So there is this fabulous ocean scene and we wondered what made them design it that way since the ocean bed looked drastically different than what it would look like now. This is what Markus Manninen had to say:

It was interesting because we actually had talked about this idea of what if an ocean appeared? Again, it’s a world on steroids. So what if literally it rained so much that you had an ocean? Well, then you wouldn’t necessarily have an ocean floor that’s been there for a long time.

So, we played with this idea that that world, which was gorgeous, which they walked through on stilts, was actually pretty bare because water comes and goes, and then that’s why you have this sort of more of a limited plant life and sort of imagined it that way.
