Recess, So Much More Than Just Play!HEALTH | Nirasha Jaganath | October 17, 2011 at 4:28 pm
Recess is really so much more than play and as a mama to a special needs kids I know that more now than ever. In fact with my little girl with Autism most activities inside the school are slightly easier for my kid, at least somewhat. This is more because they are controlled and academic, both of those qualities appealing to her. Even gym time, even with her lagging behind in physical capabilities, is manageable. Recess is where the natural play is at it’s best.
Truthfully for her it is her toughest aspect of her day but also a skill so fundamental. The physical part of running around and playing is in itself so precious, even more so when obesity in kids is at scary levels. The social skills though is something wonderful to see bloom. Recess is really so much more than play.
In the past twenty years, children have lost an average of 8 hours of recess a week.
