Our Summer Reading Party!

Luckily my husband and I are both very education focused people and have each personally seen how education can transport you to new heights. So when the kind folks at PBS asked if I would host a summer reading party I thought that was a no-brainer.  Then I also heard about Martha Speaks having 2 new episodes this week  (Martha’s Slumber Party of the Weird: TD’s Alien VisitorsThe Long Rotten Summer: School in Slow Motion) and had another reason to celebrate.

We ended up with kids aged from 2 to 6  and I am glad to say that all kids added something to the event whether by reading the alphabet or reading. Seriously touched my heart to see so many kids reading fluently at the party. It was clear that growing readers is not about dumping them in special classes and hoping they will pick up something but from parents who take the initiative to start the journey at home. I don’t believe in forcing kids but I do believe in cultivating a learning environment.

Not only did we practice reading but my dear friend Meghan, who in spite of having major car troubles en-route, did a wonderful reading of The Very Hungry Caterpillar complete with fruit pieces that she passed to the kids as the story progressed and even finished it with a caterpillar cake

I loved that each kid also took home a chart to keep a running track of books they read through the summer. PBS was kind enough to provide books for all the kids to take home, but you can also follow along on the website to get regular emails from your summer from Angela Santomero, creator of Super Why!

Disclosure: PBS provided books and kits for the kids for the party.
