My Daughter, Jennifer Garner And The Beets They Picked!

A few weeks ago I was invited to an event on a farm with my kids and Jennifer Garner. Truth be told they had me at farm and kids, but adding Jennifer Garner to the mix, though a plus for me, created visions of my girls squabbling and resulting in us making the newsother than the project at hand. I would have liked to have my older 6 year old there but sadly her therapy was scheduled for that day and since therapy is so precious when you can get it, we are always loathe to relinquish it. My 4 year old on the other hand is somewhat, shall we say free-spirited? I normally feel anxious waiting for the other shoe to drop around her. Needless to say just heading on a 2.5 hour drive to New York was already daunting at 6:30am. Luckily we were taken by a private car with our own driver too, seriously felt I was the celebrity there. My paranoid self packed well for the journey which went whine-free on the way there and sleep-induced on the way back – success I tell you. So we get to the most beautiful farm called Hilltop Hanover Farm and I am dressed for the rain that had been pouring when I left Boston rather than the 95 degree heat that was killing me. Oops, maybe a little background may help – if you read the invitation it will give you some idea what the whole campaign is about.

Please join Jennifer Garner in New York with your kids to help Frigidaire kick off their latest campaign in support of Save the Children.  Jennifer will accompany Adam Kaye, chef and kitchen director at Blue Hill at Stone Barns at the Frigidaire Kids’ Cooking Academy Summer Session, giving  you and your kids the chance to learn about the seasonality of food, gain first-hand experience preparing ‘just-picked’ ingredients and preserving “just picked” taste.

Now tell me if that does not sound like the perfect event, charity, healthy eating, philanthropy, my kids and a celebrity too? So we check out the farm starting with the vegetable farm. Beets, lettuce, chard and scallions were just some of the wonderful vegetables that we got to pick our own straight from the earth. While the photographers were trying to grab pictures of our kids with Jennifer Garner most were immersed in the gardening. My own 4 year old was just happy with the dirt and would have nothing to do with Jennifer Garner. My favorite part was taking some greens for home.

We then headed over to a Blue Hill at Stone Barns for a cooking activity. While chef Adam Kaye and Jennifer Garner led us through a few recipes. My little kid actually got to make a few dishes and I think she loved making little carrot shavings the most. The taste of the flash steamed peas were so good that most ingredients barely made the dish since we ate them. The simple strawberry yogurt was super simple and super tasty. My little girl ate all but luckily there was more at lunch.  I really loved the whole essence of keeping it fresh and eating food from the farm. Jennifer Garner, in spite of being a celebrity made a point to talk to each of us, was extra patient about pictures and remembered my kid’s name throughout.

To help give more children access to fresh foods, Frigidaire is also unveiling a partnership with the location-based “check in” app, Gowalla.  Starting June  9th when people check in at their local Farmer’s Markets via the app, Frigidaire will donate $1 to Save the Children, as part of their $500,000 commitment to the cause. I love their commitment to the cause and they even sent me a small giftcard to promote eating fresh and I used it to buy seeds for my veggie box – which is the best way I know to teach as well as eat fresh.
