I Will Post About Your Contest If You Post About Mine!

SOCIAL MEDIA | | June 2, 2011 at 3:47 pm

I receive several pitches, some good, some bad and some plain ugly. I wanted to post my reply to one of my pet-peeves.

Dear Mommy Blogger,

We have this fabulous contest on our site and we know the readers of Mommy Niri would want to know about it. Please post about it and send us the link of it when you are done.

Dear Mommy Blogger,

I am following up on my previous email to promote our contests. The contest is closing soon and I am sure Mommy Niri readers would not want to miss out. If you need high resolution images please let me know. I look forward to seeing your post on it.

And my reply…….

Dear I-can’t-believe-I-am-taking-time-to-write-to-you,

This week on my blog I have a fabulous contest for XXX and I am sure all your colleagues and friends would love to know about it. I am sure they would not want to miss on this fabulous chance and they get to discover an amazing blog too. I would love to be included in the CC on any of those emails you send out. If you need high-resolution pictures let me know.

Next time I get one of those, which will most likely be by noon tomorrow, I am sending them a link to this post.

  2. 2

I’m copying Jo-Lynne and doing the same. ;-)

    Well said, friend! Well said!

Haha! Awesome. I thought about doing this too when they send me a pitch about “this hotel chose this B list celeb as their Hotel Mom! Thought your readers might like to know!” maybe I could send them stuff happening in my personal life that has no bearing on their company. “I totes got 8 extra bucks back on a recent CVS purchase, thought your PR company might want to promote my awesomeness on twitter!!!”

  7. 7

BWAHAHAHA!! Dang Niri. I miss you!

  8. 8

Omgosh. Hello! You’ve taken every thought I’ve had in my head and put it RIGHT there in a perfect blog post. :)

  9. 9

I guess this is my future. I’m fairly new to the blogging scene. Only one business has contacted me so far. I usually go around asking my friends and local businesses if they want to be featured. Do you get these because you’re part of a blog network or do they just find you online?

In trying to keep this post short and to the point I missed a few things. If you are new and are looking for content then fine (though I personally find there is an lot of content out there without advertising contests). To me that is what it is – no thinking on my part – just expected to promote what should be called advertising.

Nope, these are regular emails and trust me in time you will get them. I will and do posts about contests if they are specific to some special content for my readers – like if the company is willing to do a separate contest/giveaway on my site (but remember this is a lot of work for us too). Also if I have a deep relationship with the brand or PR I may consider it.

But the willy-nilly expecting me to just plunk in on my blog without knowing me from a bar of soap is what gets me going.

I just got one this morning! I never respond.

      • 9.1.2

I have done several giveaways of my own, but they’re with businesses that I know well–my friends own/run them. I don’t mind sharing good contests on my Facebook page, though. I won a stand mixer once and my fans/readers helped me. So I found another contest on Parenting.com with the same prize and pointed them that way.

So how do you really respond to these emails? Delete them? Say no thank you?

  10. 10

Love Jo-Lynne’s idea and will have to try it. Of course, I wonder if they will even get the point ;)

  11. 11

I replying with your response next time I get one of these emails.

  12. 12

I can tell I’m still a new blogger, because I’ve never gotten one of these. Something to look forward to, I guess.

    That’s a cheeky request!

    Mommy Niri says:

Just so you guys know this was a tongue-in-cheek/sarcastic post – not sent in but sure is tempting at times.

    Jaime says:

I also love the extra bonus of emails that are “We selected (insert random blogger who may or may not be in a related genre) to do X campaign and we’d love for you to write about it!”

Don’t get me wrong – I’m all for supporting other bloggers. But if I a) don’t know the person and b) am getting it AS A PITCH… well, it just seems strange.

  15. 15

    This is perfection. I was going through my email today and had at least 25 emails similar to this. Annoying…I mean really? I wish these people sending them would take a minute to think, “If I was on the other end of the email, how would I respond”? But then again, we are just mom bloggers…{insert eye roll}

  16. 16

I’ve been contemplating how to respond to these emails & this is perfect!! I will credit you of course :) LOL. Hilarious swettie!!

I love the idea of sending the link to this post. I get these all the time and agree that if I might (big might) post it if I had been working with the brand at another time but also liked (and never thought to ask) that you ask for a review/giveaway in order to post the contest.

    Loren says:

What a cheek! Do you ever respond to them? What do you say?!

I’ve had a few myself regarding my main offers site with random emails coming in with discount codes saying ‘please promote’. Do they think I just do it for fun I wonder!!?! I do help out other legitimate mum-owned business though for a simple reciprocal link.

  20. 20

*standing up and applauding* I haven’t had the guts to do that yet, but I’ve certainly muttered it under my breath as I clicked delete.

  21. 21

great response, even if you never actually sent this i could see being tempted to when i get the really dumb contests where the prize isn’t even all that.

    the nerve.

  22. 22

ROFL!! HE HE HE!! You go girl and sign all our names at the bottom – LOL!
