Sometimes A Hotel Is The Destination!

A few years ago I wanted a get-away. I wanted a road trip 4-5 hours away to get to a place I liked. Hubby, obviously, was not in agreement (surprise, surprise). He bemoaned the effort, and the expense, and the expense of the effort. Then he suggested a local hotel in another town that we had good memories of meeting in. Thus became a (cheaper) holiday that was fabulous. When Four Seasons Hotel mentioned their kids cookie class and wondered if we would attend, the idea of staying at a local hotel sounded more appealing. Ok, ok, so there was a foot and a half of snow outside and we knew it was not safe in a home where tensions where climbing higher than my daughter on the couch.

So we set a date, the one directly after little missy was getting a cast of her arm. Well it was the safest date since we could swim and no telling what new trouble she would get into if we waited later (and that was good timing because a few days later she bumped her head at home during a snowstorm and we were ER visitors again)! Having lived near Boston for a long time we had never spent an entire night in the city so we were keen about that. So we packed as if we were off to a far destination and we figured The Four Season’s Hotel would be our oasis.

Of course the hotel had tickets for local attractions but seriously nothing would make us leave the hotel premises, I mean they had a pool. So staring out on the snowy roads, we put a pause on winter as we took several dips in the pool. There is something about a warm pool that makes you feel alive. Sometimes vacation means to hop and skip from one place to the other but we had absolutely no desire to flit around in the snow, besides I do firmly believe that getting those mittens, hats and jackets on your kids shaves years off your life (and no doubt doing it over and over helps none). So we hibernated in our warm cocoon like rooms, cuddling and relaxing. A weird thing to do for us techno-geeks.

Having to always sacrifice fancier surroundings in favor of child-friendly ones you miss the elegant atmosphere. At The Four Seasons they marry sophistication without giving off a “do not touch” feeling. They build so much of their activities with children in mind.  It is amazing how a dose of rest can fuel you to deal with a long winter storm. Who says you need to trek a million miles to get a vacation?

See more at my posts on the Four Season’s blog Uncommon Boston, and I promise you that watching my Memory Montage video will make any snowy winter bearable.

Disclosure: Accommodation and some meals were covered by The Four Seasons in Boston!
