A Limo, A School Bus And A Teacher In Kentucky!

A few weeks ago I was approached by The Motherhood and Kleenex (and for an awesome contest I am giving away a month’s supply of Kleenex sneeze shield) about attending a pre-Kindergarten event with my lil Kindergarten-to-be girl. At the time my little girl had been doing a Kindergarten summer camp and was having a rough start. My being away for a few days to Evo Conference in Utah did not seem to help matters so here was I feeling guilty about my work. The opportunity to share my work with my baby girl was too good to miss. Also I was hoping the bonding time it would afford my little one and me to dispel some of the frustrations she would experience.

So off we set off taking 2 flights to get to Kentucky and though we were tired we were met with a limo to take us to the hotel. The hotel was a while away so we really got to enjoy the luxurious ride and sad to confess but it was also my first limo ride. The kids were psyched to see it laden with treats for them. After getting to the hotel we we got to meet Mrs. McCrary (In 2009, she was one of five teachers nationwide to be inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame.) She had laid out a table with activities for the kids and the one thing that was apparent was the love she poured into everything she did.

After having much anxiety about my child with special needs she managed to reassure me and continued to make my little girl along with all the other children. I was in awe as she handled the children with ease as if she knew them forever. Making little boo-boos disappear in seconds and giving attention to each child.

I learned that she makes three simple promises to the parents of her students each year, which are:

  1. I promise to be the kind of teacher I would want for my own two children
  2. I will never raise my voice.  A soft voice is much more pleasant
  3. Your child will learn with joy

Does that not make you excited?

Well the next day we headed to William H. Natcher Elementary School in the school bus. Seriously another memorable moment for my kid and me. We started the day off with a few ice-breaker songs and then moved onto crafts to depict germs. Yes the kiddos actually got to make germs too. The coolest part was when they brought out the “germ juice” which with a special light in the dark showed exactly where the germs were. Since my kid has been a been whiny about washing hands I loved her getting first look at the impact. They also played games trying to prevent germs entering the body.

Then the kids were scooted off for lunch, playtime and an episode of The Magic School bus (for an episode dedicated to germs) while we got to ask Patrice McCrary several more questions. In fact I will be sharing that in several posts as I think the wealth of information is too much to share all in one post. We had a wonderful time and we really did come back empowered to tackle Kindergarten.

The lucky team that attended the event was:

Becky from Nickels-n-Dimes and her son http://blog.nickels-n-dimes.com
Ellen from Love That Max and her daughter http://lovethatmax.blogspot.com
Jamie from BlondeMomBlog.com and her daughter http://www.blondemomblog.com
Nirasha from Mommy Niri and her daughter http://www.mommyniri.com
Tara from Deal Seeking Mom and her daughter http://dealseekingmom.com

Disclosure: Our travel and accommodation expenses were covered along with being paid a stipend for attending.
