CONTEST IS CLOSED!!

Congratulations Lauralee and Divinia!

If you have read my post Passing On My Prejudices, you would know I have thing about tomatoes. I don’t ever eat them directly but I love the taste they bring to food so I try to disguise the texture.  That often means me using a food processor to make it into smaller bits, or even reaching out for a can of sauce. I am not a big fan of canned food because of the (deservedly) bad rap they get from their high sodium content. I was pleased to hear of the FlashSteam process Hunt’s uses this natural alternative to maintaining freshness, skipping the regular chemical routine.

Now Food Network star Chef George Duran teams up with the Hunt’s team to promote their canned tomatoes. He has several recipes and tips online, but no one needs to tell you why tomatoes are so versatile in cooking. So while there are many to choose from, it may be worth to take a look at Hunt’s if you are opting for a natural choice. Although I occasionally opt for fast-food,  I am a fan of cooking at home, though for me personally nothing beats a fresh tomato, a canned version is convenient and not seasonal, and if I do opt for one, it would be great to see it natural.

Want to win a coupon to get your own Hunt’s tomato? How about 2 coupons? Ok, it is Thanksgiving and I get it, you need to do a lot of cooking. Let’s make it 2 winners with 2 coupons each. Sound good? Ok, let me know what your favorite recipe (using a tomato) would be.

I like to cook home-made chili with canned tomatoes.

You simple brown ground meat (then drain off and discard the grease). Add chopped onion, bell pepper if desired, cooked beans, several cans of tomatoes, and water or broth if desired to the cooking pot. Simmer until cooked through. Season after cooking with salt, pepper and chili powder. Enjoy!

I’m with Nancy, The canned tomato’s would be put in my Chili with mild pepers, and onions, and cooked chili beans, and drained lean ground beef, chili powder, salt and pepper. Let it simmer at least 6 hours.
Then I also like them in Spaghetti sauce, and Lasagna. I like them in another dish my Mom used to call her Japanese hamburgers, that’s what she called them, I doubt if they are really from an oriental recipe.

We make a lot of pasta sauce. We’re big fans of Italian foods.

For a couple of months when my now 5 year old grand-daughter was about 3 she would only eat a few things and one of them was pasta. We got creative in adding pureed foods to the sauce.

We use tomatoes in some of the soups and stews that we make.
