Win “Testing The Ice” Book with Kid’s hat, gloves and scarf set (5 winners)
CONTESTS | Mommy Niri | October 19, 2009 at 8:51 pm
CONTEST CLOSED!!!
Congratulations Amy (book and hat, gloves and scarf set) and book winners
Diane, Andria, Erica, Carol
Two-time Caldecott Honor Book artist Kadir Nelson has been charged with creating memorable paintings that capture the essence of one of America’s finest heroes. Jackie Robinson’s legendary breaking of the color barrier in Major League Baseball is continued by his daughter’s Sharon as she honors her extraordinary father’s memory with her warm graceful storytelling.
The story revolves around Jackie after his retirement and moving to Connecticut, where although surrounded by a lake never goes out swimming or boating. When it freezes over he finally does go out but tests the ice carefully with his stick. It becomes clear that he cannot swim but the way he carefully gets to the center of the frozen lake is symbolic of his caring. Knowing that it is a Scholastic release is just another confirmation that this is a book worth reading and better yet, owning. I received a copy of this book to review and am glad to actually have a book with characters of color portrayed in such a strong and positive light.
You can win a book on Mommy Niri. In fact 5 readers can win a book each and one of the 5 will also win a kidorable hat, scarf and gloves set. To enter tell me what your favorite thing about winter and why (”count me in” type comments will not count). Make sure that you enter the correct contact details. Contest closes 25th October 2009. I love a good snowstorm (as long as we are all safely at home!). There is something about looking out the windows at all that snow then bundling up with the kids and heading outside with the kids once it is over.

My fave thing about winter is a cup of hot cocoa while snuggled in blankets after playing outside with my 3 yr. old.

We like snow tubing the best. There’s a very fun tubing hill very close to us. We live in Minnesota, so we have to at least make our peace with the winter as it lasts for 11 months (well it feels like it anyway. Thanks for the giveaway.

We love to go sledding as a family! Our tradition is to come in and have a cup of cocco with marshmallows and then watch a movie together. Love Winter!
Last year we built a snow fort between our house and our neighbors and had a snowball fight. We all had a blast. Im hoping this turns into one of our traditions!
What I like about winter..so many things our family does in winter, we all look forward to building that first snowman, diggin out the sled in the garage and going down the hill, family ski trip, holiday dinners, the look of the snow and ice clinging to the branches is beautiful to me.

When I lived in Northern Virginia, I used to love the first snowfall. It was always so exciting to the see ground covered in a blanket of snow. Everything looked like a winter wonderland.
Now that I’m in Florida, I look forward to cooler temperatures (60′s) during winter. I miss the seasons changing!

My favorite thing about winter is that spring will be here soon.
I live in an area that just gets cooler, maybe a couple of cold snaps, but no snow. I grew up in the Rockies and New England so winter to me means SNOW.

My favorite activity in the winter is to go sledding with my immediate and extended family. We like to tube at a local ski area. I would love to win this book. I recenly listened to an interview about it on NPR. It was amazing to hear Mr. Robinsions daughter describe the sound of the ice cracking beneath his feet as she revisted this memory in the interview.
My favorite thing about winter is that I get to wear sweaters.
I love heavy snow days. I live in Indianapolis, and we don’t get to many heavy snows. The 2 times that we did, my husband and I skipped work, and made a tasty seafood chowder in the crock pot. We just relax and enjoyed each others company. The kids and our great dane love playing in the snow in the backyard.

Sledding. Because it’s fun!
My favorite thing about winter is the one Snow Day we get each year. I live in the deep south, where snow is rare. However, we always get that one day where it snows an inch or two, so all the schools and everything closes down. Hubby and I are both teachers, so we get a Snow Day from work and get to play with our daughter in the snow. macd82 at gmail dot com
I love snow on the weekends when I don’t have to drive in it. Last year Baby Boy was too little to play but this year he will be 18 months and will love it.
Favorite thing about winter: walking outside at night. I love how quiet and still the world is, how clearly you can hear your feet crunching through the snow and ice, the way your breath puffs in front of you and your nose tickles as it freezes!
