If you know me you would know that I am a strong advocate of education and reading (read some of my earlier posts if you need more convincing reading to your baby, yet, grant the gift of reading, providing the tools for early readers) but also that I have been working as part of a focus group with Hooked On Phonics. Blogging on itself is a wonderful experience but when you get to get such an up close view of products you love, and even more to be a small part of it, it is an amazing experience.
I managed to get copies of the new Hooked On Phonics Learn To Read system by Hooked on Phonics and I cannot say too much of how much I love it. In fact I will just let the video of my girls watching the DVD that comes with it speak for itself. The entire system of fun and education bounded with the repetition but done smartly. The stories are simple and clear, and trust me I have early readers in my home so we have seen many early reading tools and then some.
The DVDs are just up my alley, not flashy but clean cartoons and so beaty. The infusion of classical music and intensity is amazing. I still have my little girls walking around the house passing the letter “G” to each other. I am thrilled to be offering this experience to my readers.

I homeschool my sons (ages 4 & 6). My older son learned to read at age 5 with the help of Leapfrog Letter Factory DVDs (where they teach the sounds of the letters). We also used the book “Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons”. My younger son is still learning his letter sounds, but I’d like to teach him to read once he turns 5. This Hooked on Phonics product would help a lot!

As a speech pathologist, I’ve spent many years helping the children of others learn. Now as a mom, I have to help my kids learn. Let me tell you, some days it’s easier to help the others’ kids, in spite of all their speech and language delays! Luckily, my son loves to read and seems to absorb new information and pick things up quickly. He just turned 3 but recognizes his numbers up to 100, can count independently up to 40 and has known and recognized his alphabet letters since he was 2.

Reading is my son’s favorite thing to do! I started reading to him while he was in my womb. Every day we read at least 10 books and he always selects which ones he wants to hear.
This system would be a great win for us, we’d use it faithfully!
This is my first year to actually homeschool my son – he is pre-k so far I am just taking lessons plans off of the interent but think that the Hooked on Phonics would help me!

I have found that reading to my kids when they’re very small has created a great love of learning. Sitting and paying attention at a young age helps them out later. Thanks for the giveaway. It would be perfect for my youngest.
When I used to volunteer at an elementary school some years ago, I was left to help a girl, who came from a different country, and a few other students hone in on their 6th grade reading skills. Most often, I just sat and listened to them, encouraging them when needed. It felt nice to assist them with something very important.
We encorage our 3-year old son to count and read wherever it only possible. He counts his cars, change after grocery shopping, birds on the tree etc. Plus he loves to read the signs outside and on t-shirts! And he is doing a terrific job!

my kids have always learned best by visual cues such as flashcards.
i taped notecards all over our house, labeling everything, so the kids would recognize the words.

My son just started kindergarten last week, but I read to him and we practice words through flash cards.

My niece is having problems reading. Her cousin who is only a two years older than her has been making fun of her. I would love to get this for her to improve her reading skills.
My greatgranddaughter who I love so much will be in the second grade this year but is struggling with her reading. Although she has got acceptable grades for the first grade, she seems to need lots of emprovement and she doesn’t like to read because she is unsure of herself. I’m afraid that second grade will be really hard for her and she will grow up hating to read. This Hooked On Phonics would be the thing that could give her individual help. our son loves for us to read to him but for some reason the words don’t always click with him if he reads to us.. somethign about the words not sounding as they should if you sounded them out.. such as cause and said.. that can be hard for a just learning to read kid
I taught my youngest daughter her colors by coloring paper plates. I would spread them out on the floor and make a game of it. Sadie jump on yellow, hop to the blue etc. It was fun for all

I helped my son learn his ABCs by tapping his body with each letter (not each beat) so he’d learn that each sound was a separate entity. To learn numbers, we counted up as we walked up the stairs (or crawled – we started this at the very beginning) and we counted down as we came back down. Pausing on each step is key.

My kids love to learn! We always have lots of things around for them to learn with.
I learned how to read because of a phonics program. It taught me so well that I wondered for years why others struggled, only to realize they didn’t learn the same way I did. I was picked in the 6th to assist challenged students to read, and really loved doing it. One of my cool childhood memories. Now, I have a little boy who’s 4 and will start Kindergarten next September (2010) and I REALLY want to get him started on the right foot with phonics!

Everyday after my daughter comes home from kindergarten we practice our reading. I enjoy seeing and hearing her progress and the time we spend together.

I primarily teach my kids to learn by giving them access to a wide variety of learning experiences. I’m not a “flash card mama”, but traditional teaching tools definitely have their place in the teaching arsenal.
My son has learning disbiblities and sight words are difficult for him. It was very frustrating.
I try to work with my children with their school work, but they inform me that their daddy is smarter and they would rather him help them (or they tell me they know everything and I do not know very much (even though I have a BA).

With my kids I used a lot of alphabet flashcards and turned it into a game. If they got the name or sound right they kept the card if not I kept the card (they wanted to get the most cards to win). I also printed an upper case and lower case of each letter and played memory wiht them. But they only got to keep the pair if they could name the letter and sound.
As a parent, its a trying and sometimes emotional experience teaching your own child educational work. I often marvel at mums or dads who are able to successfully home school. It takes a lot of patience!! My 4 yr old is naturally smart and has been writing, spelling his own name and various other words since he was 3, and has a huge appetite for learning.

I taught my daughter how to spell her name by singing the letters of her name.
My 4 year old son Orion is autistic and I am so proud of how hard he works to learn things which a lot of children already know. He still has trouble with his name so I have made a giant poster in every room with all the letters I made in glitter and shiny construction paper. Each time he hears or sees something he runs to the board and under his name puts the letter which it starts with. Slowly he is learning his ABC’s and his name and I love the look of happiness he has when he says “Orion did it!”
