Parenting books (seem to) target women to a large extent. It might be that reason that men don’t read them, or maybe they just do directions (or instructions). Ok, no arguing on that point as it is Father’s Day is fast approaching. In enters Tim Bete, author of Pirate Parenting, with his fresh approach to parenting. I have a younger one, who has very explosive brain, so how to handle , that is one of the things I look in books. And in general, I look for how to discipline them and how to teach them to respect.
I look for books that fit with my parenting philosophy (ie., I’m not good at letting my kids “cry it out” for hours at night) and offer practical suggestions. Some of the books I’ve come across have tips that we would not be able to do or as 2 working parents, would not have the time to do.
I subscribe/follow via google reader.
I look for parenting books that have chapters in them that I can relate to. For example, both of my kids are incredibly smart according to school testing (they told me that my son is 1 in 10,000), so I look for books that have a blurb about “dealing with the exceptionally smart child”.
If the book sounds like a rehash of every other parenting book I’ve read, I skip it.
I look for ideas for discipline.

Oh my God!! Who thinks of these things? LOL I have a son who is pirate obsessed!! We have all kids of pirate books, pirate clothes, hooks, swords, eye patches, etc! He’d think it was so funny if I got this book about raising him as a pirate. OMG. I’m laughing out loud at this!!
i look for books that are real- not looking like they are written by people who have nanies who raise the kids yet they know it all about parenting- I want a real parents point of view and not sugar coating
I look for creative ideas and engaging to read.
I look for tips and ideas that are real and not built for the “perfect” family in a polly-anna world.

I look for books written by “real” people. I want tips and advise from people who are real like me and have actually “been there and done that!”
There has to be some humor in a parenting book or I lose interest rapidly!
