I Have Been Cheating…PARENTING | Nirasha Jaganath | March 31, 2009 at 4:12 am
I have been cheating for a while now. Yes, every night I do it, and every night I hope to get away with it. As long as I don’t get caught, I could go on forever. Don’t get me wrong, I have noble intentions. Cheating helps get my kid in bed, ahem, faster. How, you say? Well we have been playing board games every night just after storybook time and I cheat to end the games faster. Worry not, I make sure to cover my tracks so she does not have a clue, yet. I know that is the wrong message to my almost 4 year old, but for now let this be our little secret. Funny thing is a few months ago she discovered cheating herself.
Yup, lil miss smarty pants realized a convenient “fake” toss of the die so that it came with just the number she needed to win was fun. I was not sure at the time whether to stop the cheating (hers, not mine). Though I did not want to kill this (newly found) love for board games, I still wanted to make sure that she knew ethics (again hers, not mine) were important. After I broke the news to her that winning the correct way feels better, I was impressed to hear her say, just after she missed a “shortcut bridge” in one of the games, “Hmmm, maybe I will get the next bridge!” Glad that she understands that cheating is no fun, unless of course you are a mommy.
